Mary is a symbol of genuineness and purity, a simple mother full of delicacy. In the Neapolitan nativity scene, she is usually represented kneeling, symbolizing the amazement and welcome for the birth of the son of God. This posture is not typical of a mother, but rather of a servant who accepts the divine will. Until the fourteenth century, however, the Madonna was represented lying down next to her son like a common woman after childbirth.
